I haven’t been able to post too much as I went straight into fight camp for my next fight which is happening in two days. Once again, I will be defending my X-1 World Events MMA Bantamweight Title against Ricky Camp of Guam. The fight is happening at the Blaisdell Arena on Saturday April 27, 2019.
I was very fortunate to have my Camp done by Coach Justin Mercado in Colorado Springs in the Victory MMA Gym with Coach Gilbert Smith adding in some knowledge and skill as well. This was definitely a different experience but one that benefited me a lot. I trained, drilled, and sparred and wasn’t confined to the four walls of a gym. My training took place on a track, steep hill, a garage, and I also did the Manitou Incline in which at the top I did some Boxing conditioning.
I strongly believe that this Fight Camp has definitely helped me prepare for battle. One of the positive things that happened was the fact that all I had to focus on most of the time was Fight Camp, training, and watching my weight. I was able to put my job on hold for the three weeks I was there and just focused on what needed to be done.
As always, at this time of Fight week it is the tail end of my weight cut. I feel that it has been an easier cut, but I still feel the effects of it, mainly that I am hungry LOL! There could be a bnunch of factors to why I feel this one has been easier. 1. I came off of a fight as I went into Fight Camp 2. The elevation of Colorado. All I can say is that I am on track to make weight and am looking forward to fighting.
I am really stoked and looking forward to be fighting on the same card as my brother, Ryan COCONUT Mondala. It has been years since we were able to fight together at home in front of our family and friends. Ryan is fighting for the 125 lb X1 State Title against an opponent I defeated before, Zach Close. This card is actually stacked from start to finish and shouldn’t be missed.
As I continue this Road to Japan series, it has come to the point where I am actually leaving soon. By the time I do my next update I will be in Japan. Got a checklist of what I need to pack, I should have everything I need. Got a time when I will be picked up to be taken to the airport. Damn its all coming so quickly. About 12 hours til my flight!
So i worked a half day at my full time job, UFC Gym Mililani. Well maybe it was considered less than half, but I was there from 10-1. Did a starter session, taught a class, and worked with a client.
Headed over to see one of my sponsors, Royce at LevelUpMassage, for a good stretch before I jump on that 9 hour flight tomorrow. Definitely need to stretch out the body in preparation for that.H
I am excited, I guess. Maybe it is a mix of things really. But overall I guess I could say that I am okay and just focused.
Just remaining focus on what needs to be done. This is not some vacation, this is WORK! I have a job to do and I intend on doing it.
Will the fights be live streamed?
I honestly don’t know. On the shooto-mma website they have links and different ways to watch past fights. My team has people in Japan reading through the website to see of they will stream it live. Maybe we need to wait until we get there to find out.
I am hoping it will be live streamed so all of you can watch it. I have a couple
I am heading to Japan! My very first fight out of Hawaiʻi! We took the fight with a little over 2-weeks til battle. We were first approached by Shooto maybe 3-weeks til fight. The good thing is I was already a week into fight camp for a fight in April. So we picked up the training and my weight cut started a little later than norm.
By this time next week in Japan it will be fight day! So I will try to send updates here from the website daily until then.
Training for Japan
The training is almost like any other training except we needed to pick up the intensity and start game planning and watching some short clips of my opponent.
I also started to get different looks from people I do not normally spar with. This allowed me to get a different feel from different people and it is always a plus. Thanks to Coach Jay Penn and fellow professional MMA Fighter Tyson Nam. Also thanks to Shojin & Kaylan for those Friday night rounds too.
My coaches took up the intensity as well. I have had some hard and grueling practices with them, drilling, sparring, and more drilling.
How am I feeling?
Honestly, a bit tired. BUT, extremely excited. This is going to be my first fight out of Hawaiʻi. Who wouldn’t be excited at that? I know it is not going to be a vacation because I have my work cut out for me. The excitement to have a Professional MMA fight out of country is high!
I am still working my Full-Time job as the MMA Manager at UFC Gym Mililani so that with training keeps me on my feet and on the go practically all day! I am not complaining though, both things I love to do and it is all part of the commitment and sacrifices to the sport I Love!
Another thing to be excited about is that this fight is a One Fighting Championship Sponsored event. One FC is the UFC of the East and steadily making its presence known in the MMA World. They are considered like the Olympics of the sport, centered around the actual sport and the not extra stuff.
Yes, I know I will be in his territory and home country. However, that is only more fuel for me to represent not only my team or myself, but my entire home of Hawaiʻi and even the entire USA.
I am still excited! I don’t think that feeling will ever change. The excitement is all around me. Everyone wishing me luck, people checking up on me, people saying how excited they are for this fight. I like that feeling.
I think tomorrow it may get a little more exciting as it will be the day before weigh ins and 2-days out from the fight. The next few days I have off from work to focus solely on this fight and getting myself prepared to battle.
How is my weight?
Well, I feel it is on track and possibly ahead of schedule. So it is a slow steady drop and I am confident that I will make weight.
Has it been easy? So-so LOL! I was walking into work the other day after training and the smell of all that good food that surrounds that place made me hungry for it. But not to worry I ate a salad and drank lots of water. Remember what I said in my last update LOL.
Sauna is a nice way to also help me cut weight so I have been spending time in there after I get my sweat initially.
What is my schedule like for rest of week?
I am most excited for Saturday Fight Night! However, I do know there are still a couple of days ahead of that.
I plan on maintaining my weight cut regiment and hopefully I am at a a comfortable place by the end of Thursday. I plan on getting some workouts in just to keep my body moving. Sharpening up my game plan and getting myself as ready as I can be is my priority right now along with my weight.

My Family, Friends, & Supporters are amazing
Everyone has been so supportive through this journey and I sincerely want to thank all of you. I am especially grateful for the amount of tickets that we have sold for this fight! It has surpassed the amount that I normally sell and that is a testament to how much support I have. That makes me even more excited to enter that cage and to represent to the best of my ability!
This soul was born for battle, my heart was built for war!
